The historical brand Azucena presents its iconic pieces and everlasting style

Azucena

The Italian company Azucena remains a reference point for contemporary design, relaunching products created in the 50s from a present-day perspective.

Sober elegance and simplicity. These two cornerstones have been leading the Italian company, Azucena, since its foundation in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Ignazio Gardella and Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua. The three great masters of made in Italy design have been able to leave their unmistakable mark, appreciated still today, the symbol of an ongoing architectural investigation.

The company, named after the gypsy in the Italian opera Il Trovatore, represented a true revolution in many ways. The very first Azucena collection reunited some furniture projects that were destined to the buildings created by the architects, and some individual products replicable in series, often suitable for small environments. This approach changed the way of furnishing and opened new paths for aspiring designers that imagined contemporary solutions to turn design into the true protagonist of the space.

In 2018 the brand relaunched, in line with its original flair and high quality of materials, but adapting its iconic pieces to a modern and innovative furniture style. An example is the Catilina chair, presented for the first time at Milano Triennale in 1957. Luigi Caccia Dominioni himself described it as “ethereal, no more than a series of curved iron bars”. His characteristic figure with upholstered cushion makes it a comfortable and almost “royal” seat. One among Azucena’s most evident features is the astounding attention to the combination of different materials that are employed in a new, daring mode.

This feature gives rise to refined current products, such as the Monachella floor lamp. Its slender structure embraces a slightly inclined shade, inspired by the looking-down head of nuns. A combination of lightness, simplicity and functionality. Monachella is, in fact, lightweight, easily portable and height adjustable.
