3 Days of Design: discovering Copenhagen’s fair through its district

13 June 2024

3 days of design dare to dream

From June 12 to 14, Copenhagen’s design festival will showcase top Scandinavian brands in showrooms and headquarters across 11 districts.

Arne Jacobsen, Finn Juhl, Fritz Hansen, Hans J. Wegner, Nanna Ditzel, Cecilie Manz, Louis Poulsen, Carl Hansen: the names that identify Scandinavian design are essentially Danish and it is no coincidence that Copenhagen, in addition to having been named the UNESCO world architecture capital in 2023, has become, implicitly, the capital of Nordic design.

Title further confirmed by the galloping growth of 3 Days of Design, the widespread design festival which is expressed in a series of events hosted in company showrooms and in other locations in the capital, this year from 12 to 14 June.

“Copenhagen has become a new and relevant epicenter for the latest ideas in interiors: a design-obsessed population, a well-functioning city and a global perspective, all against the backdrop of a Scandinavian summer” commented Tom Dixon who chose this festival to present a preview of Groove, its outdoor collection due out next year.

One of the distinctive elements of the exhibition is the sense of identity: Scandinavian design is the protagonist here. There is no shortage of international brands that participate with enthusiasm, embracing the philosophy of the event.

The theme of this edition is Dare to dream, which Signe Byrdal Terenziani, CEO of 3daysofdesign explains as follows: “Dreams are the gateway to our innermost thoughts. A springboard for the imagination, free from limitations rooted in practicalities. It’s within this dreamscape that unconventional ideas and solutions are born.”

The dream, therefore, is a reserve of ideas to draw on to find concrete solutions.

Just as in the case of sustainability, a dream that Copenhagen is preparing to realize everyday thanks to a courageous urban planning approach, oriented not only to the environment but also to the community, with spaces to live in and pass through thanks to a formidable network of cycle paths.

The organization of 3 Days of Design fits precisely into this idea of an open and sustainable city, the program of which winds through 11 “districts” along which companies talk about themselves in their showrooms but not only.

In the Holmen district, for example, there is the headquarters of Fritz Hansen which, in addition to presenting its latest innovations, hosts a workshop on the theme “Care and Repair” held by one of its best craftsmen and dedicated to the maintenance of outdoor furniture but also a talk entitled “Design for Wellbeing” with a focus on the best way to design with the wellbeing of the community in mind.

The Danish Architecture Center in the Bibliotektshaven district inaugurates the “Teenage Dreams” exhibition in which three young Danish companies present their hypotheses on what the teenager’s bedrooms of the future will be like.

Among the highlights in the Vor Frue Kirke district, Fredericia offers a dynamic lineup featuring talks by Jasper Morrison and Barber Osgerby, as well as “Crafting the Present”: “The exhibition offers a glimpse into past and present crafting techniques, showcasing creation processes, general and personal tools, and key methods. It invites you behind the scenes and into the heart of Fredericia’s classic and contemporary furniture production.”

In the same district Normann Copenhagen celebrates its 25 years of activity with an immersive exhibition entitled Elemenst of Normann. In the heart of Copenhagen there is the Kongens Nytorv district which takes its name from the large square.

Here you can find brands such as House of Finn Juhl, Umage, &Tradition, Muuto, Verpan, 101 Copenhagen, Vipp, Hay, Norr11 and others, in a succession of events, workshops and talks.

In the same district you can also find Eva Solo, Classicon, String Furniture, Man of parts, Fermob and others. Also interesting are the events hosted in the districts of Carlsberg Byen and Refshaleøen, the latter, once an industrial area, has been reconverted and on 3 Days of Design hosts mainly materials companies, almost as if to evoke its productive past.

Naturally, Designmuseum Denmark and its district also participate in the event with the inauguration of the Interaction of Color exhibition by Josef Albers for Blēo with the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. Last but not least, there are many companies present in the Marmorkirken district: New Works, Vibia, Miniforms, Kristina Dam studio, just to name a few.
