Heintzman explains how A-N-D was born and its design and production philosophy.
A-N-D is a lamp design studio that also produces in-house. Headquartered in Vancouver, its founders—Caine Heintzman, Matt Davis, and Lukas Peet—design light without neglecting beauty and decoration. A perfect blend of technology and beauty, research into materials and light modulation, A-N-D lamps stand out and are appreciated for their meticulous manufacturing and their striking presence. Emotion is one of the elements that Heintzman describes as essential in the company’s design.
What is your background, and why did you choose to be a designer?
I grew up in a creative household; my father is an artist and musician. Early on, I was encouraged to explore and trust my creative instincts. Later, art school allowed me to experiment freely with different mediums, and I became especially drawn to sculpture for its materiality and spatial dialogue. This eventually led me to pursue industrial design — a natural intersection of conceptual exploration and functional making.
What is the idea behind A-N-D, and what makes it different from other lighting brands?
A-N-D has always sought to manufacture products which are a unique synthesis of design, art, technology and functionality. We understand that light is both sculptural and emotive, yet it must also be functional and is often quite technical and complex. We enjoy the challenge of combining these elements, and at this intersection, we are able to find some very interesting results. In addition, we are based on the far west side of Canada, far from where the traditional centres of design are considered to be. We feel that our location gives us a unique experience, which in turn allows our work to be different from the expected.
Could you tell us more about the latest design project for A-N-D?
We launched three new series this year during Milan Design Week. By focusing on increased light output and significantly smaller form factors, we are able to achieve impactful illumination within refined, compact systems. This approach is evident in our latest collections unveiled in Milan, including Tier and Contour by Lukas Peet, and Pace, which I designed myself.
Each series embodies our ongoing pursuit of a clean, scalable lighting language in which technology and sculptural intent are seamlessly intertwined.
Talking about home interiors, what are the most important things to know about light?
The quality of light is one thing to focus on. To achieve this in our products, we utilize the highest available CRI LEDs, ensuring exceptional colour fidelity and a more natural, nuanced illumination. Additionally, many of our products now incorporate dim-to-warm technology, allowing the colour temperature to shift dynamically within a single fixture. This feature significantly expands the functional and atmospheric versatility of the light, enabling users to adapt seamlessly from bright, energizing tones to warmer, more intimate settings — all within the same luminaire.
Why did you choose to be based in Vancouver, and what is the peculiarity of this place?
Vancouver offers a rare confluence of modernity and nature that resonates with our design and lifestyle philosophy. Surrounded by ocean, mountains, and dense forests, it is quite easy to find reprise and inspiration in our beautiful surroundings. Additionally, there is freedom here to define one’s own language without being overly tethered to tradition, allowing us to form our vision in an unencumbered way.
How was the last edition of 3Days of design in Copenhagen, where A-N-D was present with the Cafè AND bar event?
3 Days of Design in Copenhagen was fantastic this year. The Café A-N-D Bar allowed us to engage visitors in a more immersive, hospitality and gallery-inspired setting rather than a conventional trade booth. The energy in Copenhagen is inspiring — it’s a city that truly embraces design as part of daily life. We were very fortunate to be able to collaborate with some wonderful brands and people to animate the space — operating a cafe and bar is certainly a different business than designing and manufacturing lighting!
