Sophisticated armchairs for the outdoor lounge

29 March 2022

Large and comfortable seats are the focus of the new collections for the outdoor space

Warm materials, high-performance fabrics, impeccably elegant design and meticulous attention to detail. The new outdoor collections confirm the intention to design the outdoor lounge area just like a living room. The goal is to combine comfort and elegance without forgetting the technical features, which are essential for fully experiencing these precious outdoor spaces, not only in the warmer seasons. They are now part of our daily life, convivial places but also privileged workspaces: we have discovered that small or large, the outdoor space can accommodate any of our activities. In this context, the armchair is the seat of choice and the recurring motif of these collections is the scrupulous search for the balance between elegance and comfort.

Strappy by Kris Van Puyvelde for Royal Botania

The Strappy collection (on the cover) offers the eyes a sort of magical illusion: the fabric seat seems suspended, because the connection to the structure formed by a single metal tube is invisible. The lounge chair, in particular, recalls the shapes of the outdoor chairs of the past: the metal has replaced the wood and the strips in padded technical fabric make them comfortable and modern.

Amanu by Yabu Pushelberg for Tribù

With this collection, the YabuPushelberg studio explores the characteristics of teak, giving it a pure shape reduced to its essence. Adding the detail of the seat in Canax® fabric based on hemp knotted to the structure of the armchair almost like a weaving loom. A refined artisan accent for a minimal and elegant result.

Pablo by Vincent Van Duysen for B&B Italia

For the armchair of his first outdoor collection for B&B Italia, Vincent Van Duysen has provided two different depths. Pablo, originally designed for the inside, evolves to move to the outside, in a more padded and enveloping version, faithful to the essentiality of the lines declined in the teak structure.

Carlotta by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina

Cassina explores the work of the great masters of the past and delivers an excellent project to the future: the Carlotta armchair. By Afra and Tobia Scarpa, it has a natural teak structure, complemented by a hand-woven polypropylene and nylon cord for outdoor use. The cushions are padded with recycled PET fiber.

Giro by Vincent Van Duysen for Kettal

The heart of this project is the rope, used by van Duysen in a completely new way yet with an ancient flavor. The inspiration is the Orkney chair, a typical Scottish seat in woven rope and with a high back. The designer started from this model to create an armchair with contemporary and rigorous lines. The authentic rope has been replaced by recycled polypropylene. The warmth of the teak and the comfortable texture of the cushions make it perfect for an impeccable and welcoming outdoor corner.

Sling by Studiopepe for Ethimo

The Sling chair brings with it a “free and holiday spirit”: designed for the outdoors but also for the indoor, it is inspired by the 70s-style vintage camping. But behind this light-hearted aesthetic lies a profound design awareness. The ergonomic seat has a tubular steel structure in shades of bronze. The fabric wraps and supports the body, the footrest completes the design and makes the whole even more comfortable. A project that perfectly declines the relaxed elegance that is sought in outdoor furniture.

Jeko by Paola Navone for Gervasoni

The exotic mood meets the cultured creativity of Paola Navone in the Jeko collection in EcoTeak which also includes large and comfortable armchairs. EcoTeak is a material obtained from the use of teak parts recovered following the demolition of houses on the island of Java in Indonesia. And it lends itself perfectly to declining that flavor of elsewhere that characterizes the entire collection.
