Making room for emotion:<\/strong> Memphis<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 revolutionary impact<\/em> marked a clear break<\/strong> with the extreme functionalism that had dominated European design a few years earlier. Colors, irony, organic forms, and experimentation<\/strong> concealed a shared design vision among a group of creatives who, on the evening of December 11, 1980<\/em>, gathered at Ettore Sottsass<\/a>\u2019s<\/strong> home. They were Martine Bedin, Aldo Cibic, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier, George J. Sowden,<\/em> and Matteo Thun<\/em>. Although each had their own style and background, they were united by a common goal: to design a collection of objects with a completely unexpected profile<\/strong>. Such was the group\u2019s enthusiasm that after just a few months, by February 1981<\/em>, over one hundred projects<\/strong> were already on the drawing board.<\/p>\n\n\n

The focus shifts from function to meaning<\/strong>, and the objects take on a disruptive formal profile<\/strong>, enlivened by color and bold, unprecedented lines. Even the simplest element is charged with meaning, emotion, and symbolism<\/strong>, and the choice to introduce it into a domestic interior is much more than the answer to an essential need; it is the desire to participate in a revolution of thought and taste<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This push toward the future is accompanied by a revival of artisanal skills<\/strong>, an essential act not only to distance oneself from the industrial production system but also to enrich the emotional component of the object itself<\/strong>. The hand of the artisan<\/strong> and their intervention become a language<\/strong>, and the materials are chosen to maximize a total sensorial experience<\/strong>.
Placing emotion and sensation<\/strong> at the center of the design approach was Memphis\u2019s strategy<\/em> for innovating design, with the awareness of producing not for the masses but for a niche<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Without ever neglecting function and ergonomics<\/strong>, Memphis<\/em> restores dignity and a sense of purpose to decorative impact<\/strong>, to its most aesthetic, emotional, and communicative components<\/strong>: these are the intangible values<\/strong> of the object, values that Memphis embraces unreservedly<\/em>. The core of original architects was later joined by Arquitectonica, Andrea Branzi, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, Arata Isozaki, Shiro Kuramata, Javier Mariscal, Peter Shire, Gerard Taylor, Masanori Umeda,<\/em> and Marco Zanini<\/em>. Each with their own style and a desire to be consistent with a shared aesthetic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the group\u2019s undisputed icons<\/strong> are the irreverent, captivating, and vaguely anthropomorphic Carlton bookcase<\/strong> by Ettore Sottsass<\/em>; the Nikko chest of drawers<\/strong> by Shiro Kuramata<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; the Emerald dressing table<\/strong> by Nathalie Du Pasquier<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; the First chair<\/strong> by Michele De Lucchi<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; and the Super lamp<\/strong> by Martine Bedin<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, to name just a few.<\/p>\n\n\n

Memphis\u2019s present<\/em> is still experimental<\/strong>, and for the latest Salone del Mobile in Milan<\/em>, the group Italian Radical Design<\/em>, which acquired Memphis, conceived a stand designed by the (AB)NORMAL studio<\/strong>, in which furniture and accessories designed between 1981 and 1986<\/em> are integrated into a domestic context<\/strong>. This underscores how its precious archive<\/strong> is more alive and relevant than ever, thanks also to some products presented for the first time: Venezia<\/strong>, the table designed by Sottsass<\/em> in the period immediately preceding Memphis; Dorian and Ionan<\/strong>, two table mirrors by Michele De Lucchi<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; Sheraton<\/strong>, a monumental mirror by Luigi Serafini<\/em>; Century<\/strong>, the chaise longue by Andrea Branzi<\/a><\/strong><\/em> in aquamarine tubular metal with a nod to the Bauhaus<\/em>; and the Westside chair<\/strong> by Ettore Sottsass<\/em>, inspired by Viennese Biedermeier<\/em> chairs, also on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Memphis Milano was born in 1980 around Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers determined to break away from Europe\u2019s rigid functionalism.
