Matteo Nunziati <\/a><\/strong>is one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary Italian design: a designer capable of combining architectural rigor, a keen eye for detail, and an international vision of living. With a style that combines timeless elegance and research into materials, Nunziati has developed a coherent, refined language deeply rooted in the concept of comfort as a sensory experience. For Turri<\/a><\/strong>, he designs the new B.E.L.T.<\/strong> upholstered furniture collection, with a profoundly sartorial and elegant focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woven belt is a highly symbolic and distinctive element. How did the decision to transform a typical leather detail into a structural element of the sofa come about? Was it first an aesthetic gesture or a functional reflection?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I generally consider myself a rational person. My creative process also proceeds in an orderly and structured manner: I research iconographic and artistic references, study archetypes, and analyze products that possess similar characteristics and have demonstrated commercial success.
Yet, despite this methodical control, there is always a moment in the creative process that remains mysterious and unpredictable. It’s the moment I begin to draw: among the many signs traced on the paper, one suddenly strikes me. I recognize it, develop it, and follow it almost automatically. It’s an irrational, instinctive process, difficult to explain in hindsight.
For this reason, I can’t say whether the belt was born as an aesthetic gesture or a functional reflection. I can, however, say that I always try to interpret the most authentic soul of the company I collaborate with. In the case of Turri, the reference to excellent leather goods and the world of craftsmanship was a very strong identity asset. My task was to transfigure it through my aesthetic sensibility, transforming it into a contemporary icon, both structural and symbolic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You talk about inspiration in the 19th-century art of travel trunks and the “culture of the journey.” How does this imagery tied to travel and movement translate concretely into the proportions, materials, and modularity of B.E.L.T.?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sofa was born from a reflection on the culture of travel and the evolution of the functional object into a symbol of elegance. In the mid-19th century, with the advent of the train and bourgeois tourism, the suitcase ceased to be a simple container and became an expression of style. In Paris, the first ateliers dedicated to the creation of refined trunks for the European elite were born: technical objects, certainly, but also aesthetic statements. B.E.L.T. takes this cultural heritage and translates it into a contemporary language. The large, seemingly minimalist rectangular volumes exude profound sophistication: tailored piping, finely selected fabrics, and golden proportions. The distinctive element is the leather belt that wraps around the armrests and culminates in an elegant buckle personalized with the Turri initials. A discreet yet strongly identifying feature, it recalls the world of fine leather goods and transforms the sofa into a sort of contemporary trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n

The rectangular volumes are calibrated with almost architectural precision, yet at the same time the sofa conveys softness and comfort. How do you balance design rigor and emotional dimension in your projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge is always to maintain the freshness of the first sketch, that original idea that mysteriously generated the genesis of the project. In product design, this balance is particularly complex: technical issues, structural needs, commercial demands, and industrial costs all come into play. Each phase risks distancing the project from that initial intuition. Skill lies in finding a path that allows the project to evolve, to be fulfilled, without losing that original spark. In this sense, the collaboration with Turri is fundamental: every proposal, every design challenge becomes a shared challenge. It is in the dialogue between creative vision and manufacturing expertise that rigor transforms into elegance and precision into authentic comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When designing a system like B.E.L.T., do you already think about the dialogue with the overall space? How does your overall vision influence the design of a single piece of furniture?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My studio deals with architecture, interior design, and product design. I’m therefore accustomed to working on different scales, from the smallest detail to the architectural dimension. I can’t imagine a product designer who doesn’t already visualize the place, the atmosphere, and the characteristics of the space. The characteristics of the space in which that object will live. For me, a project is never isolated: it is always part of a system. Often, it is interior or architectural projects that inspire me with product ideas; other times, it is a detail designed for a piece of furniture that becomes a significant element of a larger space. It is an ongoing, incessant, and deeply stimulating dialogue. With Turri, we are developing precisely this type of relationship: not just product design, but a shared vision that also extends to exclusive interiors. It is a collaboration that goes beyond the individual object to build a broader and more coherent language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B.E.L.T. is defined as a contemporary collector’s item, but also “perfect for everyday life.” How do we achieve this balance between sartorial exclusivity and true domestic functionality today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve often wondered if our work might seem superficial: perhaps spending an entire day choosing the leather to cover a sofa might seem secondary to the primary needs of human beings. But upon reflection, I’m convinced that humankind has more than just functional needs like eating, sleeping, and working, but also a genuine need for beauty. A desire as concrete and structural as any other.
This is precisely the heart of our work: bringing beauty into everyday life. Design must respond to functional needs, as in the case of this sofa\u2014comfort, infinite modularity, and measured proportions\u2014but at the same time it must nourish aesthetic desire through refined details, carefully chosen materials, and distinctive features that identify it with the spirit of Turri. Seeking and finding this balance is not just a design strategy: it is the DNA of our work, the profound reason that drives us every day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
