A thread runs through much of twentieth-century seating experimentation: the attempt to free the chair from its division into separate parts \u2014 backrest, seat, legs \u2014 and restore it as a single, unified gesture<\/strong>. It is the ambition behind the first cantilever chairs of the late 1920s; it is the thinking that, in the mid-1950s, led Eero Saarinen, with his Pedestal series, to clear away the clutter of legs beneath tables and chairs and give the seat back its unity as one element; and it is the same goal that, in 1959<\/strong>, led Verner Panton<\/a><\/strong> to envision a cantilever chair moulded from a single piece of polymer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That ambition, however, collided with the industrial realities of the time: several manufacturers turned the project down, some sceptical it could be built at all, others doubting it even qualified as a chair. Vitra<\/a><\/strong> took it on in 1963<\/strong>, though that hardly settled the matter \u2014 reconciling Panton’s imagined forms with the technical limits of plastics at the time proved a near-impossible challenge, one that took years of prototypes<\/strong> before the chair was finally presented in 1967<\/strong>. The response was immediate: the Panton Chair<\/a><\/strong> made an instant impact and went on to win numerous awards. The original version, with its glossy lacquer finish, is still in production today under the name Panton Chair Classic<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is within this continuity \u2014 of form, but also of uninterrupted production over time \u2014 that the new limited edition<\/strong> takes its place. In 2026<\/strong>, Vitra, in agreement with Verner Panton Design AG, introduces the Panton Chair Classic Gold<\/strong>: not simply a new colourway, but a reinterpretation that shifts the project’s centre of gravity from form to material. Where the original design worked through continuity of line, here it is the finish that works through continuity of light: the gilded surface<\/strong> does not merely coat the volume but dissolves it into reflections that absorb and return the surrounding space, turning the chair into less of an object and more of an optical presence.<\/p>\n\n\n

This shift from form to material is, fittingly, the point where the project demands its most exacting craftsmanship. The production process<\/strong> behind the finished piece unfolds across several stages, most of them done by hand<\/strong>: the polymer shell passes through a progressive metal layering<\/strong> \u2014 first a mirror-like pass achieved with a silver base coat, then the gold finish itself \u2014 and each chair is individually finished and inspected before leaving the line. It is this hidden base beneath the gold that best explains why the surface, more than a colour, is the result of a layered construction built to convey depth<\/strong> rather than mere hue.<\/p>\n\n\n

The series’ limited run \u2014 999 pieces<\/strong> made in 2026 \u2014 is not simply a matter of numbers but the direct consequence of this approach: a process carried out partly by hand cannot, by its nature, lend itself to indistinct repetition.
