In Glo-Ball, light returns to its role as a primary material of living, a steady, deliberate presence in contemporary space.
The Glo-Ball collection by Flos was introduced in 1998 as the result of an essential design gesture: restoring to light a universal form. Jasper Morrison interprets the archetype of the sphere as a quiet presence, able to engage with architecture without imposing itself. It is not an object that seeks attention, but a luminous volume that shapes atmosphere through balance and restraint.
At the technical core of the project is hand-blown, acid-etched opaline glass, developed to achieve an even and enveloping diffusion. The surface filters the light source, eliminates glare and softens contrasts, transforming light into a gentle, tactile presence. In this way, Glo-Ball does more than illuminate surfaces; it defines a mood, making it equally suited to domestic interiors, contract settings and more complex architectural contexts.
The strength of the collection lies in its typological coherence. Each model preserves the integrity of the spherical archetype, adjusting proportion and scale in response to space. In the Glo-Ball S pendant version, the sphere settles naturally above dining tables, kitchen islands or living areas, whether used individually or in multiple compositions. The opaline glass diffuser maintains a soft, uniform glow that descends seamlessly into the room, establishing a visual focal point without becoming dominant or overtly theatrical.
Table lamps, including the Glo-Ball T1, represent the most intimate expression of the concept.
Designed for bedside tables, desks or sideboards, they emit a controlled light that accompanies everyday gestures with ease. Even in more compact versions such as the Basic or the Mini, the presence remains measured and fully aligned with the original identity of the design.
In the floor versions, the sphere is elevated and takes on a more architectural role. Placed in a living room or lounge area, it defines reading corners and social spaces through a broad, even luminosity. The structure remains light, almost invisible, allowing the light itself to shape the scene.
Installed on the ceiling or wall, Glo-Ball becomes an almost architectural element, capable of providing homogeneous illumination in corridors, entrances or hospitality environments. The same diffused quality of light and formal clarity are preserved, underscoring the fact that the project was conceived as a coherent system rather than a standalone object.
More than twenty-five years after its launch, Glo-Ball continues to embody a rare balance between function, form and atmosphere. It is a collection that privileges longevity over effect, moving effortlessly through changing trends and reaffirming Flos’s ability to turn essentiality into cultural value.
