With projects and designers who know how to interpret the spirit of the times better than others

Defined by Patricia Urquiola as the “Oscar of design”, EDIDA is the award assigned every year by Elle Decor: the jury is in fact made up of 25 editors in chief of the magazine’s international network. A global and in-depth view of the sector, expressed through 15 categories ranging from designer of the year to young talent, through furniture, lighting, and wall coverings, just to name a few. The first edition dates to 2003, this year we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of a well-established and increasingly prestigious initiative. But also valuable for anticipating trends and currents that will follow design in the coming years in terms of design approach, materials, formal innovations, and personalities. It is no coincidence that the awards ceremony is held in Milan during the design week: this year’s winners tell of their desire to experiment with shapes but also to get closer to nature through decorative motifs and color palettes consistent with it.

Designer of the year: Sabine Marcelis

Dutch, born in 1985, Sabine Marcelis deals with product design but also with experimental interventions in public spaces. Among her most interesting we mention Swivel, the series of marble seats inserted in an urban context on the London Design Festival 2022. In her projects, she focuses on the sensory experience and not only on the visual impact of the forms.

Young Designer of the year: Linde Freya Tangelder

Linde Freya Tangelder (on the cover) is the same age and fellow countryman of Sabine Marcelis: the designer awarded as a young talent has an artistic approach to design and her creations have a sculptural and architectural profile.

Interior Designer of the year: Giuliano Andrea dell’Uva

For interior design, Elle Decor awards Giuliano Andrea dell’Uva, a Neapolitan architect who declines Mediterranean taste in a contemporary and sophisticated key. In private homes, as well as in contract projects, dell’Uva knows how to find the right balance between past and present.

Floor covering: Tempore by Duccio Maria Gambi for cc-tapis

Bringing nature into the home with a carpet: this is the idea suggested by Tempore, the collection by Duccio Maria Gambi awarded in the category of floor coverings. Reductive to define it as a carpet: Tempore is an element that revolutionizes and enriches the nature and function of this element.

Lighting: Serpentine by Front for Moooi

Serpentine is a spiral of fans that evokes the Chinese lanterns from which it is inspired in a new way. Poetic and elegant, it captures the light and spreads it comfortably while furnishing the space thanks to its sculptural and decorative style.

Fabrics: Arcadia by Luke Edward Hall for Rubelli

Fabrics are an interesting visual cue for understanding new formal trends and the Arcadia collection, awarded for the category, reveals the narrative profile that fabrics and wallpapers can take on in an interior design.

Bedding: Umu by Neri&Hu for Ariake

The Umu collection, awarded in the category dedicated to beds, reflects the style of the Neri&Hu studio: essential but full of ideas and details, minimal but functional and dedicated to a contemplative beauty.

Tableware: Cadence by Pierre Charpin for Saint-Louis

EDIDA rewards the know-how of Saint-Louis and in particular the Cadence collection which furnishes the table in a full-bodied and elegant way, leaving the protagonist role to the beauty of the glass and its workmanship.

Seating: Loop by India Mahdavi for Wiener GTV Design

The French designer interprets the theme of bent beech wood, dear to the historic company, in a creative and lively way. Just a double curvature generates the armrests in a perfect and unprecedented meeting of classic and contemporary, made even more interesting by the proposed color combinations.

Bathroom: Zencha by Sebastian Herkner for Duravit

In the bathroom, the theme of the moment is well-being and Sebastian Herkner interprets it by being inspired by the Japanese bath ritual. Proposing a welcoming bathtub without edges, and which can also be square in shape.

Furniture: Simoon by Patricia Urquiola for Glas Italia

The Simoon collection, awarded in the category dedicated to furniture, is a sublime example of how Urquiola interprets sustainability: in this case, a new material is obtained from the processing of glass waste with different aesthetic characteristics and of great beauty.

Kitchen: Small Living Kitchens by Andrea Federici for Falper

Spaces that are ever smaller but ever more carefully designed: Falper and Andrea Federici have responded to this strong trend with the Small Living Kitchens project, a collection of kitchen furniture designed precisely to be complete and elegant with minimum encumbrance.

Wallcovering: Fungi Forest by Stella McCartney for Cole&Son

The wallpaper designed by Stella McCartney has a strong environmental implication: not only does it depict a forest of mushrooms, but it is also, above all, made with 79% renewable fibers and reducing emissions by 30% compared to the traditional production of the same article.

Outdoor: Fornasetti’s Garden of Impossible Natures

Furnishing for outdoor spaces is another very lively theme now: EDIDA rewards among all the Fornasetti Garden of Impossible Natures collection, a unique interpretation of its kind characterized by the typical designs of the brand.
