Warm, textured and elegant, this is why the terracotta color is popular for decorating terraces, gardens and courtyards
The choice of colors for outdoor furniture can follow two directions. The first: bold, to create focal points and lounge corners that stand out, with pop and admittedly artificial colors. The second, much sought after today, more discreet, aimed at merging furniture and natural context. The basic idea is that in furnishing and living gardens, terraces, and courtyards, we are guests of nature and it is right to move in harmony with it. The terracotta color adheres perfectly to this desire to harmonize with natural elements because it is discreet and warm, and because it reproduces the color and visual texture of a natural material. And it is the preferred choice of designers who intend to instill serenity and comfort in their collections of outdoor furniture and accessories, intended for the most beautiful homes but also for contract settings devoted to hospitality. Here are some examples.
Plumon by Patricia Urquiola and Cala by Doshi Levien for Kettal
Plumon (on the cover) is the new collection designed by Patricia Urquiola for Kettal. The line also includes generous outdoor sofas made up of two elements: an essential teak frame and abundant padding that reclines and hooks to the frame itself. The textile element wraps the backrest and armrests and at the same time offers a soft refuge for a moment of convivial relaxation. Urquiola has chosen terracotta as the color of choice for these sofas: a soft chromatic vision that reflects the comfortable and informal nature of the collection.
Cala is the collection signed for Kettal by the Doshi Levien design duo. It is characterized by a high backrest that recalls the peacock chairs, and a weave of fibers that lets the light filter through, creating decorative geometric patterns. In the terracotta variant it takes on an intense and earthy color, very warm and elegant, to be combined with the tone-on-tone cushions from the same collection.
Caementum by Marco Merendi and Diego Vencato and Tribeca by CMP for Pedrali
The strong and characterful consistency of the concrete takes on a reassuring but also full of style aspect in the Caementum coffee table collection by Pedrali. This is also thanks to the terracotta color, lively and warm. The monobloc coffee table is extremely versatile and can be moved easily also because the base has a nylon foot and the inside is hollow. The concrete with which it is made is mixed with specific additives that increase its performance and make it suitable for outdoor use.
The Tribeca collection, on the other hand, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic outdoor seating of the 1960s. In the terracotta variant, the stools are particularly interesting, perfect for recreating a corner bar in your own outdoor space. Back and seat are vertically intertwined with extruded PVC and nylon core.
Art and craftsmanship are expressed in unison in Paola Peronetto’s creations and in particular in the Cartocci collection. The material used is paper clay, a mixture of paper fibers and clay which in Peronetto’s hands takes on new and unique forms of their kind. Ancestral and contemporary at the same time, they have a rustic yet elegant visual texture, light but with character. As authentic sculpture vases.
Chispa by Joan Gaspar for Marset
The terracotta variant of the Chispa lamp designed by Joan Gaspar for Marset turns orange. A lamp designed for the outdoors, rechargeable and cordless that translates classic garage lamps into an elegant version. The light it emanates is sophisticated and warm, protected by a grid that makes it even more versatile.
Ando by Ferm Living
Ando is the evolution of the classic outdoor terracotta vase. The novelty is that the interior is lined with waterproof material and the vase is accompanied by a saucer. In addition, the surface is textured and therefore takes on a very particular, almost sculptural aesthetic.
