In Milan’s Quadrilatero del Silenzio, among tree-lined streets and early-20th-century architecture, a professional studio takes shape within a building of strong architectural character.
An urban context where time remains legible—layered into surfaces, details, and proportions—quietly defining the memory of the place.

The design approach by Flavia Martina Petricca begins with a precise acknowledgment of the building’s architectural and material value.
Marble columns and original stuccoes, articulating ceilings and walls, are carefully preserved as constant references within the space—fragments of the past that become the structural framework of the project’s narrative.

Geometric mosaic floors, rooted in early-1900s tradition and meticulously restored, retain subtle chromatic variations and imperfections that speak of time through matter.
Alongside them, the parquet has been reconstructed following a traditional pattern, re-establishing a measured, continuous surface that guides movement through the interiors.

The coexistence of these two floor systems creates a dialogue of controlled contrasts: the graphic density of the mosaic is balanced by the restraint of wood; ornamental complexity is offset by a more regular texture that introduces visual calm and continuity.
The result is a carefully calibrated equilibrium, where each material maintains its own presence within a coherent whole.

Within this historically charged architectural framework, contemporary furnishings emerge as a deliberate counterpoint. Sculptural marble and glass tables, seating with essential profiles, metal storage units, and reflective surfaces introduce a new grammar defined by precision, functionality, and formal clarity.
Many elements are custom-designed to house historical document collections, which here move beyond a purely archival role, adding chromatic accents that interrupt the neutral palette and contribute to a layered visual composition.

Spaces unfold fluidly, articulated by thresholds, openings, and architectural screens that frame ever-changing views. Work areas—from meeting rooms to reception spaces—take on an unexpected character. These are not offices in the conventional sense, but environments where operational needs coexist with cultural and symbolic dimensions. Glass partitions define private workstations without breaking visual continuity, allowing natural light to flow freely and preserving a unified perception of space. Transparency is favored over rigid compartmentalization, creating a sense of controlled openness.

Materials and finishes play a central role in shaping a refined sensory experience.
Fabrics, wood, metal, and tactile surfaces interact discreetly, offering perceptual richness that reveals itself in detail rather than overt gestures. Artificial lighting follows the same principle: never dominant, never intrusive. It supports the architecture, highlights proportions, and allows materiality and natural light to define the atmosphere.

Particular attention is given to acoustic comfort and overall sensory quality. Sound-absorbing curtains, rugs, and soft surfaces help create hushed environments designed to support concentration and everyday well-being.

The result is a professional studio that interprets the dialogue between history and contemporary design with balance and clarity. Early-20th-century architecture is not treated as a static artifact, but reactivated through a conscious design approach—one capable of recognizing the value of the past and translating it into a contemporary vision of the workplace.
A project that demonstrates how design, when guided by sensitivity and rigor, can give rise to spaces that are measured, intense, and deeply attuned to their context.
