A coastal residence in Muscat, defined by light and material

A coastal residence in Muscat, defined by light and material

Overlooking the coastal landscape of Muscat, this residential villa is conceived as a unified composition. Architecture, interior design, and light converge into a coherent spatial narrative.

Designed by Carole Hakim Studio, the project interprets its relationship with the sea through a restrained and deliberate language, shaped by balance, precision, and continuity. A subtle ’souffle de vie’ emerges through material depth, controlled light, and spatial continuity, transforming a previously neutral interior into a lived-in architectural composition.

At the heart of the house lies a generous double-height volume that brings together the living, dining, and bar areas in a fluid sequence.

The layout avoids rigid separations, favoring visual and perceptual continuity. Proportions, natural light, and material rhythms define the transitions between spaces, while large openings toward the exterior allow the coastal environment to remain a constant, filtered presence rather than a literal backdrop.

The living area is structured around an idea of understated comfort.

Softly contoured seating responds to the scale of the space without overpowering it, while stone flooring and rugs subtly articulate functional zones without interrupting the overall flow. Artificial lighting is integrated into the architecture, accompanying the space with warmth and discretion.

The dining area introduces one of the project’s most distinctive architectural gestures: a brass partition wall conceived as a spatial filter rather than a divider. This element modulates transparency and reflection, establishing a nuanced dialogue between openness and enclosure.

More than a decorative feature, the metal surface becomes an active component of the spatial composition, interacting continuously with both natural and artificial light.

Adjacent to this, the bar area emerges as a focal point within the villa.

A backlit stone surface reveals its internal veining and depth, allowing light to pass through the material and transform it throughout the day. Here, materiality becomes narrative. Stone, metal, and light define the atmosphere rather than simply cladding the space.

The staircase occupies a central role, both functional and scenographic. Its light, sculptural development draws the eye upward, enhanced by a suspended composition of crystal lighting elements.

Light introduces movement and vertical depth, connecting the different levels of the house and reinforcing a sense of spatial continuity.

Throughout the project, a controlled material palette establishes a clear and consistent identity. Travertine, light woods, stone surfaces, and metallic accents are selected for their tactile qualities and their ability to respond to light over time. Each material contributes to an environment designed for longevity, where sensory perception and architectural clarity coexist.

The furniture selection, curated in collaboration with Mohd, reinforces this approach.

Each piece is integrated with intention, conceived as part of the architectural language rather than as an independent statement. Function, proportion, and formal coherence guide the composition, resulting in interiors that feel composed yet lived-in.

As a whole, the villa expresses a contemporary approach to living grounded in balance: between openness and intimacy, architectural rigor and emotion, natural and artificial light.

A project defined by restraint and precision, where every element contributes to a quiet, enduring dialogue with its surroundings.
