How do you illuminate a space without adding objects?
For more than thirty years, Davide Groppi’s research has revolved around this question. A journey that has gradually shifted the focus from the lamp to light itself, from the object to the experience. The goal is not simply to design lighting fixtures, but to create presences capable of engaging with architecture, shaping atmospheres, and transforming the perception of spaces through the smallest possible intervention.
At the core of this vision lies a process of subtraction. Light sources become increasingly compact, structures grow thinner, cables disappear, and rechargeable batteries free light from the constraints of fixed installations. Technology steps back, allowing the quality of light and its relationship with space to emerge.
This philosophy takes shape through two complementary directions. The first is Luce fuori, dedicated to outdoor lighting. At a time when gardens, terraces, and courtyards have become natural extensions of the home, light helps establish continuity between architecture and landscape. It guides the eye, enhances vegetation, suggests pathways and depth, transforming outdoor areas into spaces to be experienced with the same care devoted to interiors.

The second direction is Luce dovunque, an exploration of light’s freedom from architecture and the constraints of fixed electrical systems. Here, Davide Groppi develops solutions that make it possible to bring light exactly where it is needed, even when the desired lighting point does not coincide with the available power source. The project becomes a form of intelligent adaptation to space: light follows architecture, moves around it, passes through it, without requiring invasive interventions.
Within the Luce dovunque approach, products such as Neuro, Q, and Cartesio embody this idea through flexible systems, essential structures, and devices capable of moving the point of light beyond the limits of traditional installations. The light source is freed from its fixed position, while cables, rods, counterweights, and lightweight geometries become design tools for creating new relationships between light, walls, ceilings, and surfaces.
The research behind Luce fuori finds expression in projects that establish a direct dialogue with architecture and landscape.
With its long arch projecting into space, Sampei brings light above tables, lounge areas, or outdoor conversation settings without the need for ceiling-mounted structures or suspension points. Belladinotte, designed for outdoor environments, integrates discreetly into the natural setting, creating atmospheres and visual connections between vegetation, pathways, and architecture.
Through projects such as these, Davide Groppi continues to redefine the relationship between light, architecture, and everyday life. A research path guided by essentiality, where the quality of the experience outweighs the presence of the object. Because the most effective light is not necessarily the one that is seen the most, but the one capable of transforming a place without leaving traces of its own presence.
