Fritz Hansen Celebrates 70 Years of the Series 7

The Series 7 is one of the most iconic chairs of all time and undoubtedly one of the most defining designs in the career of Arne Jacobsen, one of the founding fathers of 20th-century Danish architecture and design. Architecture and design are deeply intertwined in his work, as his furniture often originated alongside the buildings he designed.

This is also the case with the Series 7, also known as “Severen,” presented in 1955 and initially used for the interiors of the Rødovre Town Hall, an administrative building on the outskirts of Copenhagen. The building epitomizes Jacobsen’s design approach, and the Series 7 was specifically intended for the boardroom. The designer subsequently incorporated them into numerous other interior designs, and the chair established itself as a formal reference for Scandinavian style.

One of the first things you notice about this chair is its curved silhouette: thanks to this characteristic, the Series 7 creates highly elegant geometric patterns when positioned in series, while on its own it creates an interesting effect that is not only decorative but also functional. This effect has been further enhanced over the years thanks to the numerous versions Fritz Hansen has created, modifying the materials and colors, making it versatile and suitable for a wide range of environments.

Fritz Hansen has taken a further step forward this year to celebrate the chair’s 70th anniversary: a handcrafted version with a wooden frame and leather upholstery finished with stitching. To create this version, aptly named “Tailored,” Fritz Hansen collaborated with Enrico Pellizzoni, a historic Como-based brand and leader in leather craftsmanship. Three color and texture variations have been designed for the anniversary edition: a warm ecru leather, a smooth saddle brown, and a slate gray with an embossed pattern.

The official version features classic chromed steel legs, but it can also be made in other finishes from the Fritz Hansen catalog. All options are characterized by great refinement and are suitable for both residential and professional settings, respecting the multifaceted nature of Series 7.

Regarding this aspect, Fritz Hansen Creative Director Els Van Hoorebeeck commented: “Since its launch, it has been used in both exclusive interiors and everyday living spaces at home and in the workplace. It can be both casual and exclusive. These two aspects of its character—one functional, stackable, and practical; the other striking and iconic—coexist in the same design. It has stood the test of time, time and time again.”

An equally important aspect that has contributed to the success of the Series 7 over the decades is comfort: the essential, curved shape welcomes and supports the body appropriately, while the 46cm width allows for comfortable seating and the ability to place multiple chairs side by side without taking up too much space. The high-quality leather finish is a further step towards both user and visual comfort, for interiors that welcome and satisfy all the senses.
